I've ranted about the large number of MRAPs that are showing up in US police departments. I've also ranted about the militarization of the police here.
We have nothing on Europe though.
Not only do they have police/military hybrid organizations dotting the landscape but they also employ military type vehicles without complaint by their citizens. There are numerous examples of these vehicle types but the one that most intrigues is the VBC-90.

The VBC-90 (Véhicule Blindé de Combat - armoured combat vehicle) is a 6x6 armoured car equipped with a 90 mm high velocity gun in a GIAT TS 90 rotating turret.Wait! What? Yeah thats right. A police organization has a certified 100% combat vehicle. Additionally it has a 90mm cannon. Who or what is the intended target for so much firepower? The average French citizen? The only way that a person could legitimately resist against this type of vehicle is with IEDs or shop made EFPs but I assume that knowledge is not widespread in French Society. So what is the reasoning behind a force that is equipped with vehicles this powerful? I haven't a clue. Perhaps the need for a strong internal security establishment exists because of experience gained during the bad times of WW2. Maybe its a by product of a socialist society.
It equips the armoured squadron of the Mobile Gendarmerie, with 32 units built.
Whatever the reason, the French VBC-90 is the most powerful police vehicle in the world.
The VBC 90 was designed to make guerilla on reds if we would be invaded.
ReplyDeleteThe gendarmerie is a military corp which has a police role outside our cities, and inside in case of riots.
The gendarmerie didn't use his armor since riots in 1950's in metropolitan France.
At this time they had tanks.

Many European Police forces do have real paramiltary role and heavy punch to match(you might find tanks and definetlly anti armor rockets and missles in some of these units) but that is meant for case of total war and not comparable to SWAT teams,serving warrants and parking tickets in MRAPS.Most of the gear is never seen in public.
ReplyDeleteIn our country i have seen that first hand in practice in our war of independence police forces were the first line of defense and fought a least as many battles as the Military. Conscript armies (common in europe) need time to mobilize, police forces just open the armory + there are legal details armed forces do no have authority over civil population at least until Martial law declared ,that is why many of European top antiterror units are part of LE force not Military, Military units have no right to operate against terrorists that are regarded as common criminals by most of western world.
you sir are a fucking liar. i did the research and guess what. MRAPs that the US public is outraged by are COMMON in mainland EUROPE! the UK is the exception but almost every EUROPEAN country has a quasi-military police force...and its at the national level too.

You might see armored riot control vehicle but no MRAPs or simmilar in European streets.Only place i can think of that would have that kin of gear in regular use is Italy whith their long strugle against Mafia.
DeleteAs i said heavier and better armored and armed vehicles might be in police issue but are not deployed on daily basis ,try and find a couple of pictures of incidents in Europe and in most cases you will find mostly unarmored police cars and vans even on scenes where you have Special Forces like GSG or GIGN in action let alone SEK(these guys do not even dres up tacticool ,but come in jeans and hoodies strap on helmets and bodyarmor) or similar eqvivalents to US SWAT ,don't you think that something like 90 shots fired by police in whole of Germany in a year tell a story.
